The building project
Balmacara Mains was, because of it’s initial function as a cattlemans' house, constructed on a tight budget and although it is in great building in a prime spot, internally the quailty of the constuction thrify. Once in the hands of the Local Regional Council it’s maintenance was no more than remedial, and the structural, insulative, and water retarding ability of the building, was for a long time, causing deterioration to the building.
At the end of 2005 it was decided to redevelop the property as a Guest house by its current owners the Craig family. Once finance and legal permissions were in place, plans were developed by Dougie Craig and a building Warrant was obtained. Local tradespeople were engaged.
Work commenced in May 2006 with the stripping out of the existing dilapidated walls. This was to prove the unveiling of some serious defects in the building structure and the painstaking process of putting it all right began. The building project was finally completed in September 2007.
